Sometimes, we choose dishonesty because we care.
What it is we care about… only the ghosts know.

Adapted from Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts, the production transforms the classic into a dark contemporary fable set within an Asian family.
A Timeless Classic Reborn: From a 19th-Century European Family to the Human Condition of Contemporary Asia.
Loh Kok Man’s distinctive theatrical language collides head-on with Chien Li-Ying’s sharp and unflinching writing. Together, they peel back layer after layer of the darkness left unspoken by the previous generation, revealing an Asian family built on illusion, secrets and lies.
A mother trapped by lies yet longing to hear them. An adopted son who manipulates lies, only to be deceived by them himself. A biological son who has seen through every lie, yet longs for one. And a daughter-in-law who questions lies, yet ultimately conforms to them.
Together, they summon the distorted and lingering authority of inherited morality, confronting the audience with questions surrounding the moral restraints and hypocrisy embedded within traditional Asian values.
Chien Li-Ying takes Henrik Ibsen’s classic Ghosts, a portrait of a family imprisoned by the moral restraints and hypocrisy of 19th-century European society, as her point of departure. Through a cross-cultural and cross-temporal approach, she transforms the classic into a portrait of the contemporary Asian family.
Known for her sharp social observations and nuanced portrayals of human nature, Chien Li-Ying, one of the writers of the Netflix Taiwanese original series Wave Makers, has long explored family structures, gender, power relations and contemporary social issues. Her practice frequently employs the methods of rewriting classics and textual translation, transforming Western classics into contemporary narratives rooted in Chinese cultural contexts.

Across Borders, On One Stage : Four Acclaimed Performers, Two Generations in Conflict
Bringing together accomplished performers from Taiwan and Malaysia, the production features Taiwanese screen and theatre actor Nelson Shen and Golden Bell Awards nominee Clara Lee, alongside award-winning Malaysian theatre director and actor Yeo Lyle, and Two-Time Best Actress Siew Thung.
Together, they portray two generations locked in a battle of family lies, emotional entrapment and the weight of Confucian morality. They seek to expose the very things they depend on for survival; they long to break free from the very things they are prepared to defend to the death.
The family becomes a pyramid of power, where every word is a battle without gunfire.
Sometimes, we choose dishonesty because we care.
What it is we care about… only the ghosts know.
When traditional values and social expectations become an inescapable curse, control and labels imposed in the name of love slowly construct a cage from which no one can truly escape.

Loh Kok Man × Chien Li-Ying:
Distinctive Theatrical Language Meets Sharp, Unflinching Writing
Loh Kok Man’s directorial practice is deeply rooted in an engagement with contemporary society. Drawing on allegory and classic works, he uses theatre to question existing social structures and the human condition. His work is distinguished by an integration of multimedia, lighting, sound and the physicality of performers, exploring the visual and spatial possibilities of theatre. His previous works have received recognition at the BOH Cameronian Arts Awards, including awards for Best Director and Best Lighting Design, reflecting a practice that balances poetic expression with critical inquiry.
Both The Bee and Animal Farm received multiple BOH Cameronian Arts Awards nominations, with the latter winning Best Supporting Actress.
The production is further brought to life by an accomplished team of Malaysian theatre practitioners, including renowned costume designer Beatrice Looi, independent musician Kent Lee, multimedia designer Fairuz Sulaiman, set designer Wei Lin, and lighting designer Sing Lim.
